At John L. Costley Senior Middle School in East Orange, two washing machines stopped working. Principal Dr. Thelma Ramsey Bryant turned to social media for assistance, and the response was swift.
Students drop off their uniforms each morning at the school's free laundry spot. By day's end, clean clothes await them. The breakdowns threatened this vital service, but help came quickly. Five donors stepped forward with offers of new machines, while others pledged repair work.
"Although we do have people who have said they're going to donate, we're able to expand the laundry room," Dr. Ramsey said, according to News 12 New Jersey. "If we have four to five machines, we can even expand it even more to the larger community. We can set up some Saturdays where people can come in and wash. This will just allow another resource for the community."
The school began washing uniforms to boost student success. Clean clothes mean one less worry for kids trying to learn. The simple system works: drop off in the morning, pick up after class.
Dr. Ramsey's online call for aid sparked quick action. Local residents rushed to support the program, proving the strength of community bonds. Their fast response kept the service running strong.
The flood of support presents new possibilities. More machines mean more help for students. Weekend access could soon let local families use the facilities too. The school aims to turn this setback into a chance to grow.
The school welcomes additional support for its laundry program. Those wanting to contribute should contact the main office.
