At $54.99, this Kentucky Straight Bourbon marks the start of drinks that pay tribute to the school's mascot. The mix blends 70% corn, 21% rye, and 9% barley, packing a 92-proof punch.
"This is the first time Rutgers University has done something like this," said Eric LeGrand, according to Forbes. "Since we entered our partnership with Rutgers Athletics, it has opened many doors for the brand."
The 92-proof strength links back to LeGrand's past: it matches his first jersey number, 46, from his freshman days. In 2010, while playing for the school, LeGrand suffered a spinal cord injury.
After five years in barrels, this drink offers sweet caramel notes mixed with dark cherry hints. A spicy rye kick wraps up each sip.
More schools now mix sports and spirits. By 2022, eight in ten major college sports venues sold alcohol in public areas, based on Associated Press data.
The brand took shape in March 2023 when LeGrand teamed up with Brian Axelrod. That same year, they struck their first deal with Rutgers sports, which led to this bigger venture.
Their main focus? Past students. "Not that it isn't for students who are 21 years of age or older, but alumni will be our main category of customers," LeGrand said. "Bourbon tends to be a 35 and older type of drink."
Want to try it? Catch three home games this fall to snag a bottle. You'll also spot it at basketball games and wrestling matches in VIP spots. New Jersey shops, bars, and the company's website stock it too.
