Built in classic New England style, the red wooden structure stands proud against the sky. Students from Wandell Elementary rushed across first, their footsteps echoing through the fresh-cut timber.
Per a release from the Burrough of Saddle River, the path to completion twisted and turned. Covid struck, costs shot up, and supplies ran short. Yet the project pushed forward, backed by Bergen County's Open Space Trust Fund and the Walsh family's support.
"This milestone unites Saddle River's heritage, community spirit, and vision for the future," the release said.
County Chairwoman Mary Amoroso stepped in for Executive Jim Tedesco, stressing their push for green spaces. Her words sparked hope for future projects.
This bridge marks just the start. Next come art pieces by sculptor Carolyn Palmer and the Walsh family. Young artists from Wandell Elementary will soon see their work shine in the park too.
The wetlands now stand protected, open only for quiet walks and nature watching. Birds found a safe spot here: the Bergen County Audubon Society made it official, marking it as their newest sanctuary.
Town officials seek more partners in this green mission. Their goal is to spread word of their success far and wide, hoping to spark similar projects elsewhere.
This bridge fits perfectly into Saddle River's master plan, demonstrating what can happen when people, money, and good ideas come together to make something special.
