Middlesex County and NJ TRANSIT held a groundbreaking ceremony. The $70 million rebuild of the New Brunswick Train Station is now underway. Work should start in late fall of 2025 and finish by 2028.

Built in 1903, this station ranks among the busiest stops along the Northeast Corridor line. Construction will kick off with sidewalk and exterior work. Crews will tackle Easton Avenue and Albany Street first.

A new ticketing center will feature an elevator and waiting areas. Both westbound and eastbound platforms will get renovations, and pedestrian transfer passages will be widened.

State-of-the-art trainway and building systems will be installed. Plans also cover modernized waiting areas, new entrance signage, and better landscaping.

"Upgrading and expanding one of the busiest hubs along the Northeast Corridor is part of our commitment to modernizing New Jersey's transportation infrastructure for commuters and residents — preserving historic spaces while investing in improving quality and accessibility to move the regional economy forward," said Governor Phil Murphy, according to Jersey Digs. "As the HELIX brings thousands of innovators to our state-of-the-art hub at the heart of Rutgers' campus, we will meet this influx of workers with safe, modern, and reliable transportation."

The station rebuild prepares the city for what's ahead. Nokia will soon arrive at the H-2 development. The Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center opened not long ago. Rutgers University keeps growing. More visitors will pour in during the coming years.

NJ TRANSIT partnered with the university on a three-year agreement that makes the school the official sponsor. The deal aims to promote and integrate the public research institution into the heart of the city's transportation hub.

"For more than a century, the New Brunswick Train Station has been the front door to our City," said Mayor Jim Cahill. "With this investment and modernization, we're ensuring it remains a welcoming, accessible, and forward-looking gateway that supports the growth of New Brunswick, Middlesex County, and the entire region for generations to come."

Infrastructure consulting firm AECOM designed the renovation. The firm was awarded a $7 million contract in November 2023.

Several major transit hubs in the state have gotten overhauls in recent years. Newark Penn Station underwent a $160 million renovation in 2021. Hoboken Terminal is undergoing a renovation as part of a public-private partnership.
