Toms River will construct a monument at Shelter Cove Park. The structure will pay tribute to service members who died and those who served.
Mayor Dan Rodrick shared these plans at Veterans Day ceremonies over the weekend.
The monument will sit close to the water's edge at Shelter Cove. Names of men and women from the township who perished in service will be engraved on its surface. American flags will surround the site, and lights will illuminate it after dark.
"Each veteran represents a story of sacrifice, commitment, and bravery," Rodrick said, according to Shore News Network. "This monument will make sure those stories are never forgotten."
Officials chose the location because it overlooks Barnegat Bay. Its beauty and visibility made it ideal. Rodrick described the planned structure as "a magnificent and enduring symbol" of gratitude.
"What better place to unveil this symbol of respect than at the beautiful beach in Shelter Cove?" Rodrick said. "From the water, it will shine as a radiant beacon of light symbolizing not just our freedom, but the enduring spirit of America."
American flags will line Bay Avenue at the park. The row starts at the park's clearing and extends toward the monument site.
"This display will guide us toward a space of reflection and remembrance," Rodrick said, "a place where we can connect with the sacrifices made for our freedom."
The township will fund the project. Rodrick's administration will oversee its development. Design specifics and a completion date should arrive later this winter.
Rodrick stressed that the memorial aims to unite the community in shared appreciation. "Let us come together as a community to honor our veterans, keep their memories alive, and pass on their legacy to future generations," Rodrick said.
Visitors on Barnegat Bay will see the monument from the water. Rodrick called it "a tribute to courage, sacrifice, and the unbreakable spirit of Toms River's veterans."
