Atlantic City Electric will provide up to $300 in direct help for customers who meet certain requirements through its Customer Relief Fund. Higher energy supply costs have hit many households hard. The program started in July. More than $2 million remains available for those who qualify.

Exelon, the parent company of the utility provider, donated $4 million. That's a one-time gift. Nonprofit partner SHARES runs the fund, which serves limited- and moderate-income customers who meet requirements for federal and state energy assistance programs. Thousands have received help so far.

"Atlantic City Electric remains deeply committed to helping our customers manage rising energy supply costs," Jessica Grullon, the company's communications manager, per NJ.com. "For more than 100 years, we've been part of South Jersey's community fabric, and we understand these challenges because our employees are the neighbors, friends, and families that make up these communities."

Grullon pointed out that Black and Latino households face bigger financial strains when costs rise. When grants get approved, credits will appear on a customer's account with the power company.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program gives grants up to $1,200. No payback required. Annual household income can't go over 60% of the state median income guidelines. Homeowners may qualify. So can renters, roomers, and subsidized housing tenants — even if they're current on bills.

The Universal Service Fund works to make energy bills cheaper for those who meet the requirements. Rules have shifted in recent months. The Fresh Start arrearage forgiveness portion now accepts past participants too.

Lifeline provides $225 to people who meet certain income guidelines. Utility account holders can get this benefit. So can tenants whose bills are part of their rent.

Residents can use a Department of Community Affairs self-screening tool to determine what energy assistance benefits they might qualify for. The utility provider also has an Assistance Finder tool at atlanticcityelectric.com/AssistanceFinder that helps match residents with programs.
