The Cranford Theater won a 2025 national "BIG Holiday Giveback" award. Its support of the town and the mark it left on neighbors earned this prize. The business gets $1,500 in Downtown Cranford Gift Cards.
Miconex runs the Downtown Cranford Giftcard program and backed this competition. Winners come from people who live in town and send in names of businesses they want to honor.
"It's such an honor to win The BIG Holiday Giveback, and truly overwhelming to even be thought of, let alone nominated or actually win," owner Doreen Sayegh said, according to Patch.
This theater stands as the last independent movie house in Union County. Only a handful remain across the state.
Sayegh battled trouble from the coronavirus, strikes in Hollywood, and a partial ceiling collapse last April that shut down operations until November. Miconex praised her determination to keep the business alive and protect what the town holds dear.
Recent months brought fixes to the ceiling and new features that allow different types of shows. Comedy nights and stage performances are now in the works, according to Sayegh.
"It's fitting that a beloved Cranford business that goes above and beyond for their community has won The BIG Holiday Giveback, demonstrating the power of community spirit to keep our downtowns thriving," Colin Munro, CEO of Miconex, said.
As of Dec. 18, more than 140 shops and restaurants take the Downtown Cranford Gift Card. Sayegh wants to share the prize with others so more people can experience holiday joy.
Sayegh learned the business under her father and worked in theater circuits since she was young. Building around a strong base of neighbors and supporters means everything, she explained.
"I believe you have to put good out into the world to get good back," she said.
Current movies and upcoming shows can be found on the theater's website.
