The Edison Public Library threw open its first floor to visitors on Sunday. This completed a $1.8 million makeover that kicked off in mid-2024. The Main Library at 340 Plainfield Ave. got extensive work done, paid for through the library budget without adding extra taxes.
"This renovation represents our commitment to lifelong learning and community engagement, with the goal of ensuring that the Edison Public Library continues to serve as a hub, offering residents of all ages the opportunity to interact, connect, and obtain access to endless resources, programs, and services," Director Allan Kleiman said, per Patch.
Phase one tackled the upper level and wrapped up in early 2025. Workers installed new technology and added more public workstations. They created quiet spots for reading and studying. The space got a fresh program area, a conference room, and a makerspace. New carpeting, lighting, and seating finished things off.
Phase two? Done in December. It focused on the lower level. Kids now have a play area. There's a special spot for storytime. Teens got their own space. The meeting room got a facelift, and computers were added alongside a cafe. People could still use key services while construction hummed along.
"Our overall goal was to reconfigure space and renovate the building in a way that better served patrons' needs," Kleiman said. "These improvements will enable us to offer a more welcoming, functional, and accessible space for years to come and reflect our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of our community."
The building opened at its current spot on Plainfield Avenue, between Route 27 and the Edison Train Station, back in 1965. Expansions came in 1975 and 1987. This latest project marks the first major overhaul in 37 years. Meyer Construction from Manasquan handled the job.
A small ceremony happened on Saturday. Sunday hours ran from noon to 5 p.m.
People can grab new library cards at all branches now. Four choices will be available, each showing off a design with the new logo.
"We are thrilled to welcome everyone back to a building that not only reflects our mission of learning, connection, and discovery, but also better meets the needs of today's patrons," Kleiman said. "We are grateful to our patrons for their support and patience during the renovation period and invite all Edison residents to our newly renovated facility."
