Bergen County Audubon Society Schedules Nine Meadowlands Bird Walks Through April

The Bergen County Audubon Society will host nine guided bird hikes across the Meadowlands between February and April. Parks in Secaucus, Lyndhurst, and Little Ferry will serve as meeting spots.

The series starts Feb. 8 with the Annual Super Bird Sunday walk at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst, running 10 a.m. to noon. Prizes await participants who spot birds featured on football team helmets — Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, and Philadelphia Eagles among them.

Three days later, guides will lead a walk at Mill Creek Point Park in Secaucus. Snowy egrets and other wading birds frequent this area. DeKorte Park hosts another walk Feb. 25.

March brings two more outings. DeKorte Park welcomes visitors March 1, where waterfowl and raptors appear often. Mill Creek Marsh in Secaucus opens its trails March 4.

April features four events spread across the month. Mill Creek Marsh draws attention on April 8 with a focus on early migrants like warblers. April 12 brings a Birding for Beginners class at DeKorte Park — participants learn bird identification, optics, and field guide use before hitting the trails.

An Earth Day walk happens April 22 at DeKorte Park, which boasts 3.5 miles of walking trails, gardens, and views of the New York City skyline. The final outing takes place April 29 at Losen Slote Creek Park in Little Ferry. This park protects one of the last low-lying forested areas in the region.

All walks run 10 a.m. to noon. Boots are a must for the Losen Slote Creek Park walk since trails get muddy.

DeKorte Park walkers should meet at the Meadowlands Environment Center at 2 DeKorte Park Plaza. Mill Creek Point Park visitors gather at the end of Millridge Road. Mill Creek Marsh attendees convene at the trail entrance off the back parking lot of Bob's Discount Furniture at 3 Mill Creek Drive. Losen Slote Creek Park participants meet in the lot next to the soccer field on Mehrhof Road.
