Monmouth County revealed the winners of its third annual Snowplow Naming Contest on Feb. 9. Two fifth-graders earned the chance to name county snowplows. Alyssa Bodnar from Swimming River Elementary School in Tinton Falls proposed Snow Crusher. Savannah Miller from Memorial School in Union Beach came up with The Frost Responder.
The competition welcomed all fifth-grade students across the county.
Students turned in a snowplow name with a letter. The letter had to explain their choice and describe how to stay safe during a snowstorm. Both winners got a Certificate of Recognition from the Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners.
Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone, liaison to the Department of Public Works and Engineering, made a surprise visit to each elementary school to recognize the students. The snowplows were unveiled during these visits, showing off the winning names and schools.
"My fellow Commissioners and I congratulate Alyssa and Savannah on their winning submissions to our Snowplow Naming Contest," Arnone said, according to Patch.
Arnone thanked all students, teachers, and school districts across the county for taking part in the 2025 contest. He urged residents to watch for the newly named plows on roads this winter.
"When plows come around this winter, make sure to keep an eye out on the roads for Snow Crusher and The Frost Responder," Arnone said.
This marks the third year the county has held the naming competition. The program gets young students involved in local government while promoting winter safety awareness among families.
The two snowplows will operate throughout the county during winter weather events, each vehicle now displaying the student-created name and the school each winner attends.
