PASADENA, CA - NOVEMBER 07: Planet Fitness unveils a brand new mini Planet Fitness within the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena on November 7, 2016 in Pasadena, California. The new mini Judgement Free Zone in the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena is the second of its kind in the country. Featuring the same motivational and inspirational messages on the walls and the brand's signature purple and yellow colors and branded equipment, the fitness room mirrors Planet Fitness clubs throughout the U.S. Local California Planet Fitness franchisees supported the renovation by donating equipment, and the Company's staff helped transform the room from a storage closet to a bright workout space. This is part of Planet Fitness' and its franchisees' plan to provide safe and welcoming workout environments to local Boys & Girls Clubs throughout the country. Planet Fitness has taken over the old Acme supermarket building at Middlesex Corner in Middlesex borough. The gym now occupies half the space at 125 Bound Brook Road.

According to Patch.com, Acme shut down in February 2022. The building stayed empty for four years after that. It sits on Route 28 where Bound Brook Road meets the main road.

Doors open at 5 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. On Saturdays and Sundays those hours shift to 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.

One franchisee runs this gym plus several others scattered throughout New Jersey. That same owner just opened another Planet Fitness at Blue Star Shopping Center on Route 22 in Watchung.

Levin Management Corporation leases out both shopping centers — the one in Middlesex borough and the one in Watchung.

Only half the old grocery store got filled. What happens with the other half at Middlesex Corner? Nobody's saying yet.

You can sign up through the gym's website. This marks another empty store getting a second life.

The Watchung spot opened recently too, which shows this franchise growing fast in central New Jersey. Both gyms moved into spaces where stores had closed and left nothing behind.

That Middlesex borough building sat dark for over four years after the supermarket chain walked away. All across New Jersey, old retail spaces keep turning into fitness centers as traditional stores disappear.

Will the franchise owner open more gyms nearby? That hasn't been announced. These two new spots give people in Somerset and Middlesex counties fresh places to work out.
