Newark will construct a $50 million health and wellness center. The building spans 75,000 square feet and will house a fitness area, pharmacy, and primary care clinic when doors open in early 2028.

Crews break ground this summer. Two years later, residents can walk through the entrance.

Patients won't need to drive across town anymore. Newark Community Health Centers, a network of federally qualified health centers, will operate medical services inside. Everything from checkups to prescriptions happens under one roof.

Over 282,000 people call Newark home, yet many struggle to find doctors or afford treatment. Underserved areas have suffered from gaps in medical support for years.

"This new wellness hub will be a game-changer for our community, bringing together critical health resources in one accessible location," Mayor Ras Baraka said to Newark Today.

Dr. Shereef Elnahal runs Newark Community Health Centers as President and CEO. His organization provides primary and preventative care to those who need it most but can't always pay.

"We're excited to partner with the city to expand our services and reach more Newark residents who need quality, affordable healthcare," Dr. Shereef Elnahal said.

Officials will celebrate with a groundbreaking ceremony this June. That happens once permits get signed and approvals come through.

The $50 million marks a serious commitment. Years of unequal access to doctors, clinics, and medicine have left scars across neighborhoods, but this project aims to close those gaps and bring wellness within reach for everyone.
